Answer to Canada Quiz #21
Tim Horton’s career as a defenceman in the National Hockey League began with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1950 and lasted 24 years. In 1964 he opened his first “Tim Horton Donuts” shop in Hamilton, Ontario. By the time of his untimely death in a car accident in 1974, he and his business partner, Ron Joyce, had built up a small chain of “Tim Hortons” shops.
Joyce aggressively expanded the business until today there are approximately 3500 stores in Canada, 800 in the U.S. and a couple dozen in the Persian Gulf. Close to three-quarters of the brewed coffee and baked goods purchased in Canada are sold at Tim Hortons.
