6. What, in French Canada, is a dep?
Answer to Canada Quiz #6
“Dep” is short for dépanneur, which is a Canadian French term for a corner store or mini-mart, frequently with the added amenity of offering beer and alcohol for sale. The original French meaning of dépanneur is “mechanic” or “repair person,” but for several decades in Canada it has been applied to these stores. In Montreal where winters are harsh and driving can be difficult, neighborhood dépanneurs are a particularly popular convenience.
