38. When Barry Bonds set the Major League Baseball single-season record of 73 home runs in 2001, his performance was enhanced by what substance obtained from Canada?
Answer to Canada Quiz #38
Ash has long been the default material for baseball bats, but in 1996, Ottawa carpenter Sam Holman fashioned a bat from maple wood and provided it to Ottawa Lynx minor leaguer Fernando Seguignol. The next year Joe Carter of the major league Toronto Blue Jays began using one of Holman’s maple bats, and a trend was started.
Barry Bonds adopted the maple bat later that year, and used a maple Model 2K1 manufactured by Holman’s Sam Bat Company in his record-setting year of 2001.
Today the Louisville Slugger company estimates that 65% of its bats sold are maple.
