1. What do approximately 115,000 Montrealers do on Canada Day?
Answer to Canada Quiz #1
July 1 is Canada Day when Canada’s birthday is commemorated throughout most of the country with parades and fireworks, much as Americans celebrate Independence Day.
In Quebec province, however, July 1 is also Moving Day, and patriotism tends to be overshadowed by the spectacle of trucks being loaded with household furnishings.
Prior to 1973 Quebec leases were required to begin on May 1. The date was later changed to July 1 and the legal requirement removed, but the tradition remains.
In Montreal, where 60% of residences are rented, Moving Day places great demand on moving companies and truck rentals (costs for these services triple) and results in heaps of jettisoned furniture being left on the street for trash collectors.
