Mary Pickford was born Gladys Marie Smith in Toronto. Dubbed “America’s Sweetheart,” she made a successful transition from silent films to talkies and won the 1929 Best Actress Oscar for her role in Coquette. With Charlie Chaplin, D. W. Griffith and husband Douglas Fairbanks she co-founded United Artists.
Norma Shearer grew up in Montreal and married famed Hollywood producer Irving Thalberg. She was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award six times, winning for The Divorcee in 1930.
Marie Dressler was born Leila Marie Koerber in Cobourg, Ontario. She played the title character in the first feature length film comedy, Tillie’s Punctured Romance, and was awarded the best actress Oscar in 1931 for her role in Min and Bill.
