Answer to Canada Quiz #25
A. Glenn Gould
B. Oscar Peterson.
Canada can claim two of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century.
The eccentric genius from Toronto, Glenn Gould, was renowned for his interpretations of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. He used a specially designed chair that allowed him to sit very low at the piano, pulling down on the keys, and ceased giving concerts in 1963, at age 31. Gould was the first pianist to record any of Liszt’s piano transcriptions of Beethoven’s symphonies, including the Fifth Symphony heard in the audio clip.
Dubbed the “Maharaja of the keyboard,” Oscar Peterson is considered by some critics as ranking with his idol, Art Tatum, at the top among the great jazz pianists. His best known original composition is Canadiana Suite, a collection of pieces reminiscent of places across Canada. He plays “Place St. Henri” in the audio clip, a tribute to the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood near his childhood home in Montreal.
